How could a painter resist these vast fields of bright yellow flowers which turned around to always be facing the sun? MAX-AGOSTINI found them all around Gargilesse, within a radius of ten kilometers.  In fact, the Berry region was the largest producer of sunflowers in France. Midmorning, in the hot summer months, when Max would set up his easel along the roadside, the sun was already bright in the sky. He needed to work rapidly enough so that he could catch "frontwards" these enormous flowers, already heavy on their stalks. Sometimes he just didn't paint quickly enough, interrupted by a gust of wind, or the overwhelming heat. The result: magnificent paintings with sunflowers facing the horizon, the "backs" of the flowers "facing" the spectator! Max didn't find this a problem, as he remembered his first impression upon arriving in front of the fields.  I, though, was slightly dissatisfied when I came to pick up the canvases in his studio, having missed the right time to appreciate these revolving plants.

MAX-AGOSTINI en trouvait tout autour de Gargilesse, � moins de dix kilom�tres � la ronde. En fait, le Berry �tait le plus grand producteur de tournesols en France. Au milieu de la matin�e, en plein �t�, quand Max installait son chevalet au bord de la route, le soleil �tait d�j� lev� depuis longtemps. Il fallait qu'il travaille assez vite pour saisir "de face" ces �normes fleurs, d�j� lourdes sur leurs tiges. Quelquefois il ne peignait pas suffisamment rapidement, interrompu par un coup de vent ou par la trop grosse chaleur. R�sultat : de magnifiques tableaux de tournesols faisant face � l'horizon, le "dos" des fleurs "face" au spectateur! Max ne trouvait pas cet �tat de faits g�nant, car il se rappelait sa premi�re impression en arrivant devant ces champs. N�anmoins, je restais un peu sur ma faim, quand je venais r�cup�rer ces toiles dans son atelier, ayant manqu� le bon moment pour appr�cier ces plantes pivotantes.
